“大多数日本人面对欺骗太弱智，面对压迫又太没种“，所以被东条等人骗了的日本人”应该为自己的愚蠢承担责任“；日本军人太容易堕入残暴可能是由于”道德和教育的基本缺陷——甚至整个民族信仰核心的某段空白“；可惜战后民间的自省因韩战的爆发被美军的审查机构压制未成气候。现在再看中国的牛奶疫苗，韩国的女星自杀，其实都没强到哪儿去。——都是某种程度对他者的残暴，都被全民迅速地消化掉了。
评分对多种史料的收集始终是Dower书一大特色，读来耳目一新。但他没有给出战后日本人为何能广泛接受美国在政治、经济、意识形态方面的领导的根源。另外《金阁寺》中也有讨论战后对美心态的部分，很微妙。
评分在很多地方，作者用了前现代的权力关系隐喻去阐释事件，大概有误导人的嫌疑。而写到宪法第九条的来历时，作者将各说法中很关键的一个——“币原说”斥为是“老人常见的错误记忆”，两句话就带过，作者这种做法让人觉得不是很可靠。不过总体而言，读这本书还是挺有收获的。
