卡尔·洛维特，德国人，生于1897年，青年时代在弗莱堡听过胡塞尔的授课，与海德格尔的关系一直处于亦师亦友之间。由于其犹太人身份，30年代开始流亡生涯，经意大利，日本，美国，50年代返德。一生著述遍涉神学，历史哲学，社会哲学和思想史研究，但无论生前或死后长期处于汉语（甚至英美）学界的视野之外。
