诗一般的修辞手法，儿子随老子都带有强大的文艺基因，可诡计运用不太理想，日记叙述放在当下已不新鲜，算是先行者之一，但解答缺乏意外性，逊色于《死亡之壳》。

虽然现在看来诡计之类的很老了，但是人物塑造和故事是真的都很优秀。

如果单论情节的复杂性和凶手的意外性,这部作品最多只能算是中等之作.但作者的心理推导能力实在是太厉害了,这一点已经在Thou shell of death中领教过了,前面的日记部分看似觉得有点枯燥,推进速度也远不如后半段,但很多伏线就在日记里,最后凶手的欲情故纵,也是心理战的胜利.

带诗人写的推理小说就是会有过于细腻的毛病，层层铺垫只为了最后一章的惊天逆转。Lewis将这本书分为了四个部分，第一部分是男主长达四十篇的日记，足以劝退不少人。第二部分着重描写他实施谋杀的经过，第三部分是常规的家访，最后将前三个串联起来做出解答。剧情和诡计其实相当简单，谜底也并不难猜，但Lewis非常擅长刻画人物和设计人物对话，不管是日记还是家访部分的内容可读性都相当得高。我尤其喜欢Chabrol在电影版中做出的改动，用另一位带诗人苏轼的那一句:小舟从此逝，江海寄余生来形容再合适不过了
