What can we learn about the Chinese revolution by placing a doubly marginalized group--rural women--at the center of the inquiry? In this book, Gail Hershatter explores changes in the lives of seventy-two elderly women in rural Shaanxi province during the revolutionary decades of the 1950s and 1960s. Interweaving these women's life histories with insightful analysis, Hershatter shows how Party-state policy became local and personal, and how it affected women's agricultural work, domestic routines, activism, marriage, childbirth, and parenting--even their notions of virtue and respectability. The women narrate their pasts from the vantage point of the present and highlight their enduring virtues, important achievements, and most deeply harbored grievances. In showing what memories can tell us about gender as an axis of power, difference, and collectivity in 1950s rural China and the present, Hershatter powerfully examines the nature of socialism and how gender figured in its creation.

著者简介

贺萧（Gail Hershatter），曾求学于美国汉普郡学院、中国南开大学、美国斯坦福大学，获斯坦福大学博士学位，曾任美国亚洲研究学会主席，现为加州大学圣克鲁斯分校历史系自身讲座教授。著有《天津工人，1900-1949》，《个人的声音：20世纪80年代的中国妇女》，《危险的愉悦：20世纪上海的娼妓问题和现代性》，《中国妇女在漫长的20世纪》，《记忆的性别：农村妇女和中国集体化历史》等。

看完發現其實自己對中國農村女性的了解，尤其是奶奶那一輩的，真是好少。中國近代“人”的歷史/中國的人類學那麼豐富，那麼有趣，但是在國內卻從來沒有人真正教過我們。

材料详实。不过，还是觉得理论部分没看出什么新意，以及对材料的分析和阐释稍弱了，“发现”也比较常识性。。。

哎，挺好玩的。好玩在于一开始是带着理论视角进入，但渐渐的就进入了那些人的喜乐悲欢。50s口述史。对时间的不同记忆。追忆和叙述痛苦。组织起女性逃离强制婚姻的桎梏。推广婚姻法的策略和斗争和辛酸。拼着一口气证明自己的价值女的能跟男人干一样的活。妇女领袖忙碌的公共生活对子女家庭的亏欠和悲伤和冷漠。和家庭工作的隐蔽不被承认和劳碌的生活。被长期的劳动模范生涯所吞噬的个人记忆——人的故事和命运永远都是丰富和复杂的。方法上亦有值得涵咏的地方。

女神贺萧！仅仅是关注到这一群体用十年收集整理口述史料就已经是巨大成就，但在研究中发现的memory has its gender不仅对于性别研究意义重大，而且对于整个历史学界都有深有启发。Always admire scholars who determined to do oral history!不愧是得过两次Joan Kelly还得过Levenson的人！
