Esherick's dissertation book. Very detailed and nuanced account of 1911 revolution in the two provinces. Obviously he did abundant archival work. It apparently lies the foundation for his Boxer book. "The structure of society" is his particular perspective to understand Chinese political and social movements, and it make sense. A STRONG UCB STYLE.

周锡瑞先生的《改良与革命》是一部老书了，成书至今已愈40年。不过该书引用了大量档案资料，在史料汗牛充栋的今天仍不失为一部资料翔实，观点鲜明，对清末新政、辛亥革命研究极具参考价值的好书，并且提供了对辛亥革命研究的另一个与大陆主流学界完全不同的视角。 作者几乎没有...  

对于学习历史的学生，这本书还是应该好好看看的。特别是从高中走上来的对历史认识太局限的同学，读过这本书后，会对历史的人物有新的认识。 读过黄仁宇先生的大历史，再读周锡瑞的地方史，又是不一样的滋味。
