此書甚閤阿姨殖民學口味：殖民大法好，深度自由帝國貿易殖民比深度重商掠奪式殖民好，住不住人無所謂、製度搬來最重要XD以及此書同Carles Boix一樣有個特點，思路非常清晰、自我邏輯完整、論證非常密實、讀者和作者思維高度同步，往往讀到一處覺得“是不是還要考慮什麼”“是不是應該寫成什麼”，下一節、甚至下一段即馬上給齣（雖然有時較勉強的）補充解釋說明，非常耐讀。

這本書完全可以稱得上“當代比較曆史研究的扛鼎之作”，屬於Mahoney自己推崇的那一套方法的實地演練——比較序列分析、布爾法比較、因果機製研究，等等。然而，實事求是的說這本書卻並沒有提齣石破天驚的論斷，以至於其核心論點依舊是建立在AJR的基礎之上（即便更加詳細且貼近曆史），而且這個議題貌似也並非目前比較政治研究中最關注的——所以，期待Mahoney下一部非方法論的著作。

比較曆史分析的大作，殖民主義的遺産

這個就純粹是看口味瞭。重商主義殖民阻礙自由主義殖民，但沒有重商主義殖民，自由主義殖民也不來。自由主義殖民保障發展，但沒有自由主義殖民有戰爭也行。有戰爭保證發展，沒戰爭也保證發展。受現代政經訓練的肯定不會喜歡這種15個案例要添一堆均輪來處理outliers的書。
