网上下的PDF，内置的目录索引和词条解释很方便。整本书编排非常有逻辑，从语言的起源，到构成语言的单位一级一级递增，到语言的习得，到语言的演变和文化，思维就像躺在一叶小舟里面，随溪流徜徉而下，一路经过大河大江最终汇入大海，整个过程非常地舒服。作者的目的也只是单纯地带着读者领略下语言的全貌，要想对一些语言现象一探究竟的读者可能在这本书里找得到方向，但在想深入的话就只有靠自己继续探索下去了。

与第三版相比，整本书的结构调整不大，值得一提的是目录和further reading做了优化，极好，但是没了习题的答案……仍然只是科普向读物，严肃学习不用看，除非特殊情况比如用作考研参考书……

看的是第五版，LAGCC这学期用的教材，感觉太浅了，练习要从contemporary linguistics里面借不少。

在读这本书之前，完整读过的英文原著只有John Storey的《Cultural Theory and Popular Culture An Introduce》。这本书就是一个文化研究的简史，但其晦涩难懂直接让我断断续续一个多月才读完。不过这本《The Study of Language》却完全没有给人这样的感觉，很轻松半月搞定。（...
