Few issues in development raise as much heat as the impact of transnational corporations (TNCs) on the South. However, the exact nature of the relationship between foreign direct investment and development remains unclear both conceptually and empirically. ERIC RUGRAFF is Lecturer in Economics at the University Robert Schuman of Strasbourg, France, and Researcher at the Bureau d'Economie Théorique et Appliquée (BETA).

DIEGO SÁNCHEZ-ANCOCHEA is currently Senior Lecturer in Economics at the Institute for the Study of the Americas, University of London, UK. In October 2008 he will move to St. Anthony's College, University of Oxford, as Lecturer in Political Economy of Latin America.

ANDREW SUMNER is a fellow of the Institute of Development Studies, UK. He is a cross-disciplinary economist.
