極有用的史學史研究。也是一份大規模的文獻綜述。作者再次提醒人們，社會的政治關切與其對曆史的解釋有著緊密的關係。曆史並不是按照事件發生的那樣的客觀和事實性的描述，必需清楚瞭解這些曆史描述的源頭。

一戰史學“簡”史。分成幾個階段，齣現修正與反修正的多輪反復。每次德國的去戰責運動都與時政密不可分。戰爭其間卸責；兩戰間美國戰責分擔論興起旨在追究美參戰決策，並配閤國內孤立主義，歐本土則為防共；戰後去罪化西德為與民族德性論做切割，北約則為防共。費捨爾爭論頗有精神自虐傾嚮，矯枉過正，用戰爭爆發後修改的戰爭目標去論證戰前目標有失精準。整篇綜述鮮有涉及國關界的研究內容，即使是史學傢的，也隻是順敘幾位重要作者的觀點並加以點評。
