1828年出生于贵族家庭，童年不幸丧父丧母。
1844年考入喀山大学，后退学回乡，投身农奴制改革。
1851-1854年在高加索军队服役，发表处女座《童年》。
1855年11月进入彼得堡文学界，受到作家们的热情欢迎。
1863-1869年创作长篇小说《战争与和平》，问世以来，被公认为世界上最伟大的小说之一。
1873-1877年，经过12次修改，完成《安娜·卡列尼娜》，小说技艺炉火纯青。
1879年，因无法长期忍受理想与现实的背离，突发精神危机，撰文记录自己精神探索过程，取名《忏悔录》。从此远离贵族生活，衣食简朴，亲自从事体力劳动。
1889-1899年，完成长篇小说《复活》，深刻、全面、有力地批判俄国社会。
1910年，为寻求精神自由离家出走，后病逝于小车站，享年82岁。
