差點被開頭幾首給騙瞭，並不是陶淵明式的鄉村牧歌，更多的是沉重，豐饒，冷冽，暴曬，一如土地和自然本身。其實第二首就已經透露消息: No one really understands the savagery of this place, the way it kills people for no reason, just to keep in practice.寫夜裏的貓抓老鼠，Once the rat screams, it's dead. That scream is like a map: it tells the cat where to find the throat. 有好幾首關於少男少女的初諳人事，性和生殖像是對土地獻祭。我最喜歡March那首的結尾一段，可為全集作總結。

這些天讀這本給我帶來瞭極大的快樂，她寫普通人的生活，詞語簡單樸實卻描繪齣深遠的感覺，她賦予這些人的視角以新的意義。這些詩歌穿插在我的日常生活中，就像一股堅實的棉繩，將我縫補。

Feels like you are old and tired, nodding by the fire or sitting in the winter sunlight, fearing or welcoming that moment to come. And some voice is murmuring within your head, but it's not your own. Will we return to seek what we cast behind? Will we achieve what we craved for from childhood?

幾天前的一個晚上，我譯完 The Wild Iris，腦袋比較興奮，加上之前喝瞭一大杯黑咖啡，因此無法入眠，第二天早晨六點纔睡下。九點起床，簡單早餐後開始譯《鄉村生活》的同名詩，十二點譯就，貼在這裏聊作書評可也。這一首令我想起意大利詩哲利奧巴爾迪 Giacomo Leopardi 在其生命的最後時光裏寫下的 “ The Setting of the Moon”，兩位詩人對於死亡與人類真實境況的沉緬與嘆喟亦是極近的。
