Bob Bearden was seventeen when he enlisted in Texas, given a Lee-Enfield rifle and sent to fight at Normandy after training, as squad leader of the 507th mortar division. This is the first book written about the 507th at Normandy and details the confusion ( the 507 landed two hours after the main assault began, almost on top of heavily-entrenched German defenses), German ingenuity - they flooded the fields from a nearby river, rendering the Allied attack plan useless - and the sheer bloody-mindedness of the 507th, who fought their way out of three major traps before surrendering.Bearden himself killed twenty enemy troops in one single engagement in what has been called "the bloodiest small-arms battle of World War II". Captured in the ferocious fighting, he became an unwilling POW, sent to Staling IIIC in Poland. Eventually managing to escape, and taking a route through the then Soviet Union, Bearden traveled a perilous path and his first-hand account of this ranks amongst the best and most gripping evasion stories ever written, as well as providing an insight into a section of D-Day never before covered.
