全方位批判Diamond的Gem, Gun and Wheel和Collapse，有理有據，可惜大眾不甚瞭解此書，Diamond那種膚淺的environmentalist論述依然盛行。但此書最重要的貢獻是，作者們關注到瞭人類社會resilience的一麵，編者在前言中甚至說，曆史上幾乎沒有發生過真正的collapse（社會秩序的崩壞、族群的消失），更多的是survival和reintegration，從而突齣瞭人的能動性，改變瞭Tainter以來對collapse係統論理解。
