這本書講鳥類學曆史，乍一看主題很生僻，看進去真是好玩極瞭。不僅學到好多關於鳥的知識，而且讀到細微具體的科學史，多少聰明人走多少彎路打多少口水仗做多少開始以為有用後來發現沒用再後來的確有用的功，纔得到這麼一點點知識。這樣文筆好有趣味懂專業的人寫的專業科學史是最好看的！書中大量從中世紀到十九世紀圖書中翻印的鳥類插圖精美絕倫。我這種從來不買書的人看完後想的是，將來在舊書店看到要買一本。

好看的插圖是附帶的，更好看的是人類如何一點一滴地積纍齣對恐龍苗裔的全麵認識。我們今天的某些常識，在中世紀甚至僅僅30年前，可能還不那麼理所當然。

嗯，这本书到底好还是不好呢？我个人觉得插图是一流，非常精美，我就是在图书馆翻看这本书，被插图吸引了才借的。书的文字部分，我略嫌干巴巴、学究气。我觉得作者既然为鸟类学家，应该有更多第一手的感受和经验，那不妨多从第一手资料写起啊！但是每一篇除了开头和结尾是有...

书名是the wisdom of birds，不过对内容更准确的概括应该是the wisdom about birds。当然，作者有充分的理由使用现在这个名字，因为这是对17世纪John Ray的鸟类学巨著the wisdom of god的模仿。在John Ray之前，有亚里士多德和普林尼和一系列的中世纪博物学者，但（作者认为）...
