For children, folktales enhance awareness of culture diversity while bringing together universal characteristics and behaviours that all people share. Teachers, librarians, and storytellers can now choose from 25 variants of the popular, internationally told "Cinderella" folktale in this first volume in "The Oryx Folktale Series". The folktale variants in "Cinderella" represent a broad range of cultures and geographical areas, styles, and variations on the basic theme of the persecuted heroine who emerges victorious, regardless of the circumstances. Addressed to teachers and librarians, the preface discusses the background of Cinderella, folktales in general, and the concept and development of variants. The 25 variants that follow are geographically arranged, with each variant accompanied by a short introductory paragraph that summarizes the plot and discusses the cultural background of the story. These paragraphs, and the book's introduction, are written to read aloud to children from 6-9 and alone by those nine and up.
