Quelques maisons dans l'archipel finlandais : c'est le “paradis d'été” pour Thomas, six ans, ses parents Kajus et Isabella, et quelques familles. Jeux de plage, observation fascinée des 《femmes merveilleuses》 et imprévisibles que sont Rosa et Isabella, expériences “scientifiques”; confinant à la cruauté auxquelles se livrent les enfants, soirées entre amis ou en famille, tout semble se répéter immuablement d'été en été, tandis que passent les années soixante, avec la mort de Marilyn Monroe, l'assassinat de Kenndy, l'apparition des monokinis et de la télévision. Mais, avec le paradis d'été, c'est bien le paradis de l'enfance qui, à travers la sensibilité poétique et inquiète de Thomas, se fissure imperceptiblement. Jusqu'au drame.
