In Translator, Trader , Douglas Hofstadter reflects on his personal act of devotion in rewriting Françoise Sagan’s novel La Chamade in English, and on the paradoxes that constantly plague any literary translator on all scales, ranging from the humblest of commas to entire chapters. Flatly rejecting the common wisdom that translators are inevitably traitors, Hofstadter proposes instead that translators are traders, and that translation, like musical performance, deserves high respect as a creative act. In his view, literary translation is the art of making subtle trades in which one sometimes loses and sometimes gains, often both losing and gaining at the same time. This view implies that there is no reason a translation cannot be as good as the original work, and that the result inevitably bears the stamp of the translator, much as a musical performance inevitably bears the stamp of its artists. 弗朗索瓦絲・薩岡（FrancoiseSagan），1935年生，1954年以“您好，憂愁”而一舉成名，之後不斷發錶小說和劇本，確立瞭她在法國文壇上的地位。

伍爾夫的獨立女性是有一間自己的房子，而到瞭薩岡這裏，獨立女性成為不要一切生活的牽絆，拒絕扮演任何角色（工作女性、母親、妻子、情婦……）。而這種拒絕，這種隻追求快樂和當下的生活，必定需要物質基礎。薩岡的女性角色是“物質的”是“沒有道德的”是“不負責任的”，但她是可愛的，是獨立的，是不屬於任何人的，是始終遵從自己內心的，是不妥協的。她是不完美的，但是說女人就要是完美的呢，因為不完美纔可愛啊！

我獻上自己translator’s note裏麵喜歡的一句，“When the novel came to an end, I was indeed quite overwhelmed, and I felt very sad to say good-bye to these people forever.” 相信很多熱愛文學的人都會感同身受吧。往好的一麵想，雖然永彆瞭，但他們也成瞭你的一部分。

故事並不復雜但是薩岡的文字有她獨特的魅力大膽又細膩一麵是Charles耐心編織的金絲鳥籠一麵是Antoine的道德與責任約束 Lucile這樣一個天真任性的女孩在男權社會中難以避免的陷入睏境當然如果讓一個“正統”的女權主義作傢寫這個故事結尾大約是Lucile將他倆都拋在身後獨自麵對世界吧可薩岡偏偏是個離經叛道的人寫這麼個結尾反倒更犀利更壓抑薩岡筆鋒之下也常常暗藏深意讓老練的Charles說齣 "I want You to be happy independently of me." 讓Antoine的狂亂中混雜著柔情和暴力實在是深刻的諷刺

喜歡這部小說，雖然看完需要緩緩。Lucile愛Antoine嗎，當然愛，Antoine是她極度沒有責任感極度天真的人生中的唯一一次意外，一度讓她懷疑自己，讓她不愛自己瞭，這對從來都隻想要自由的Lucile來說，已經是所能做到的最大付齣。Lucile擁有諸多可愛迷人的性格特點，也是因為她的hedonistic, carefree 和 weak-willed，這是她的缺點，卻也是她的魅力。Charles早就知道瞭這些，他欣賞並接受這些，從不試圖改變，而Antoine被la chamade衝昏瞭頭，沒有意識到罷瞭。Lucile真的是小鳥呢，不要任何束縛，不要任何擁有，她有得到自由嗎，或許吧。而La Chamade，在響起的那瞬間，就已經是 “I am engulfed, I succumb…”

La chamade，屬於隻能在一個階段裏燃燒殆盡的東西
