一個層麵是“開放關係”中自由與占有的角力，人物掙紮著擺脫社會的習俗與約定要活得authentic和自由，但總有比嫉妒更痛苦的事情來摺磨他們；另一個層麵則是第三幕中Bertha被比喻為愛爾蘭，Richard“在她最需要的時候離開”之後又迴歸，從此不知道自己的位置何在：“我對你的欲望不在漆黑的相信中，而是在永不停息的懷疑的傷痛中。”
