契訶夫四幕劇，和《三姊妹》比有點平淡，二十五年來，鄉紳萬尼亞放棄個人幸福，與外甥女索尼雅經營莊園，供養死去的妹妹的丈夫謝列布利雅可夫教授。謝列布利雅可夫和他年輕妻子的到來打破瞭莊園的寜靜。萬尼亞逐漸發現他過去崇拜的教授隻是一個庸纔，並愛上瞭他的妻子。萬尼亞於激怒中槍擊妹夫，卻沒擊中。隨著這對夫婦的離開，莊園中人們的生活又迴到瞭原點。
