Its purpose is to examine contemporaryissues which are broadly based and commandmore than passing attention. We emphasizehuman values, sex roles, the supernatural-bothholy and unholy, man's relationship to his en-vironment and his creations, and the complexnature of communication. Because an "issue" is a matter in dispute, wepresent a diversity of viewpoints and a widerange of genres, authors and ideas. We juxtaposeBennett Berger's study of college students in"Endless Adolescence" with Peter Schrag'sdescription of blue-collar youth in "Growing Upon Mechanic Street." W.H. Auden's "The Un-known Citizen" is a foil to Alvin Toffler's "ADiversity of Life Styles." Opposing John Haines'poem "The Legend of Paper Plates" with theKwakiutl "Prayer to the Young Cedar" suc-cinctly illustrates a major difference between twocultures. In Chapter 2, "Hers and His," we moveaway from the polemical rhetoric of women'sliberation to seek a middle ground by examiningthe sex roles of both men and women.
