The crossroads was the reason for the village. The village happened<br >because of the travellers crossing from one town to another. There<br >were four towns equidistant from the village, with nothing between<br >them except tracts of moorland and forest interspersed with<br >complicated water systems. The burns flowed down unexpectedly,<br >here to the north, there to the south, as if someone had taken the<br >watershed and turned it topsy-turvy, flinging the countryside for<br >miles around into a confusion ~f hillocks and lochans. A curious<br >intricate country, lying at the; foothills of the mountains that<br >dominated the north-west horizo~in long rounded contours, visible<br >from the little cairn-topped hills that sheltered the houses below.<br >The slopes west of the village were steepest, anticipating the<br >mountains beyond the humping back of the ridge that kept the main<br >force of the west wind off the settlement. These hillsides were<br >forest-covered, blanketed with thick cover of oak and ash, chestnut<br >and rowan, beech and birch - huge forest trees extending through<br >the years to slow maturity. Near the village the woods were<br >carefully forested, the young saplings and the dead wood being<br >thinned out year by year, so the land was accessible and open. It did<br >not seem to be an old forest, or perhaps it was merely the renewal of<br >something which had stood much longer, because the forest itself<br >appeared so much older than the trees.<br > The road from the south wound through patches of this forest<br >which converged on it from the west, sometimes engulfing it as it<br >dipped down into hollows and circumnavigated outcrops of rock-<br >strewn hillside. The town which lay about ten miles south of the<br >crossroads was just above the sea, and though the sea itself was<br >untouchable the houses still huddled above the harbour, and<br >occasionally ships crossed the empty water to islands and countries<br >beyond.
