A Note to the Reader
The exercises in this book are designed to maintain
and increase your strength, flexibility, and endurance.
They are of special benefit to people over thirty-five
years of age, who want to exercise in ways that will
protect their joints. The exercises can be considered
preventive, since they may help to delay the onset o~
osteoarthritis. If rheumatoid arthritis is present, the
exercises can be considered therapeutic.
If you are under the care of a physician for the treat-
ment of arthritis, please consult him or her about the
exercises that seem best for you.
Important warning: The exercises in this book
are not meant to be carried out by persons with
severe crippling from rheumatoid arthritis. It
would be painful and even haimfnl for such per-
sons to attempt to stretch themselves to reach the
positions described. All exercises in this book are
designed to incur practically no pain that would
linger for any length of time. If pain should fol-
low any particular exercise, that exercise may not
be appropriate for you; consult your physician
about it. Your doctor may prescribe a personal-
ized program tbr you, which may contain some of
the exercises in this book.
If you have rheumatoid arthritis, please do not
consider exercises and physical therapy exclu-
sive treatment for your condition. These are very
important modalities which are only part of an
overall medical treatment program consisting o~
medication, a balanced mix of rest and activity,
and physical therapy.
