故事讲述的是美国西扩过程中的一些去挑战荒地的pioneers。主人公是一女子Alexandra，任劳任怨，机智且有责任感。作者一方面在书中表现了对这些开荒者的尊重与崇拜，另一方面也受到与她同一时代著名思想家作家爱莫生梭罗的超验主义思想的影响，表现了对自然及wildness的崇尚。这算是一个作者思想上的对立矛盾吧，因为开荒者们的目的恰恰是改造自然，征服荒野。书中人物性格描写得比较丰满，值得一看。
