这本书由14篇讲稿整理而成，处理了文艺复兴思潮与古典主义、中世纪、拜占庭学术的关系，以及文艺复兴时期有关人的观念和修辞学的变迁。作者语言平易、讲述清晰，并且非常注重用扎实的文献纠正一些常见的误解，在浪漫主义对修辞学的影响等方面也颇有创见。不足之处是，作者基本上完全依赖文献学方法，从文本及其流传情况得出结论，对文艺复兴思想的深层潜流则涉及较少，读起来缺点味道。从篇末的一些议论中可以看出作者人文主义的史学理想：史学家是为那大写的“人类记忆”服务的人，他对事实的尊重不像非历史的逻辑学家的那种尊重，而是一种不带矫饰的尊重。
