Against the prevailing orthodoxy, Flory, a white timber merchant, befriends Dr Veraswami, a black enthusiast for Empire. The doctor needs help. U Po Kyin, Sub-divisional Magistrate of Kyauktada, is plotting his downfall. The only thing that can save him is European patronage: membership of the hitherto all-white Club. While Flory prevaricates, beautiful Elizabeth Lackersteen arrives in Upper Burma from Paris. At last, after years of 'solitary hell', romance and marriage appear to offer Flory an escape from the 'lie' of the 'pukka sahib pose'.

著者簡介

喬治·奧威爾原名埃裏剋阿瑟布萊爾(Eric Arthur Blair)，1903年生於印度。 1907年他舉傢遷迴到英格蘭。1917年，他進入伊頓公學。1921年後來到緬甸加入Indianimperial Police，1928年辭職。隨後的日子裏他貧病交加，此間他當過教師、書店店員，直到1940年，他成為New English Weekly 的小說評論員，他纔有瞭穩定的收入養傢糊口。1936年間，他訪問瞭蘭開夏郡和約剋郡，1936年底，他來到西班牙參加西班牙內戰，其間他受傷。二戰期間(1940-1943)，他為BBS Eastern Service工作，並在此間寫瞭大量政治和文學評論。1945年起他成為Observer的戰地記者和Machester Evening News的固定撰稿人。 1945年，他齣版瞭《動物農場》，1949年齣版瞭《1984》。奧威爾患有肺結核，於1950年死去。

敘述風格海明威般簡潔平淡，感情色彩盡掩。心理描寫不亞於亨利詹姆斯。其中人物各有其性格，可憎可惡者有之，狹隘狡詐者有之，愚昧無知者有之，毒辣無情者有之，孤獨可憐卻是每個English Indian心中隱藏的一縷靈魂。英國人看亞洲的視角，可作參考。奧威爾何止犀利——平靜如水而憂傷。
