Yoffee目前的集大成著作。Yoffee有一些核心的思想是值得注意的，特彆是不要把社會看成是一塊鐵闆，整個社會會一起演化到下一階段(這裏演化當然包含著進，退，甚至崩潰)，要從社會的各個部分來看，也許能看到演化的不平衡性。但Yoffee的具體研究中，大多設計到兩河流域的文字材料的，那麼，沒有文字的時期及區域要怎麼從社會的各部分齣發來研究，該書沒有辦法解答
