Yoffee目前的集大成著作。Yoffee有一些核心的思想是值得注意的，特别是不要把社会看成是一块铁板，整个社会会一起演化到下一阶段(这里演化当然包含着进，退，甚至崩溃)，要从社会的各个部分来看，也许能看到演化的不平衡性。但Yoffee的具体研究中，大多设计到两河流域的文字材料的，那么，没有文字的时期及区域要怎么从社会的各部分出发来研究，该书没有办法解答
