Sayer 迴應建構論與實在論的挑戰，將社會本體建構為封閉的分層本體。將實在界分為empirical、actual、real三層。人之認知則由signifier-signified-referent三角形成。

一個人追求真理和一個人認為世界上不存在真理並沒有什麼邏輯矛盾。一個人認為世界上存在真理不見得他就能發現真理（中世紀經院哲學？）。而且feyeraband早就指齣科學傢們可以完全無視這種對認知論的討論而不影響科學進展。加個realism的名字不代錶你研究的東西就比彆人的更real。濫用數學不對，濫用哲學就有理嗎？
