著者简介

Born in Northern Ireland in 1972, MAGGIE O'FARRELL grew up in Wales and Scotland and now lives in London. She has worked as a waitress, chambermaid, bike messenger, teacher, arts administrator, and journalist in Hong Kong and London, and as the deputy literary editor of The Independent on Sunday. Her debut novel, After You'd Gone (2000) won a Betty Trask Award and was followed by My Lover's Lover (2002); The Distance Between Us (2004), winner of a Somerset Maugham Award; The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox (2006); The Hand That First Held Mine (2010), winner of the Costa Novel Award; Instructions for a Heatwave (2013), and, most recently, This Must Be the Place (2016).

Maggie O'Farrell的第一部非虚构作品，上了不少网站的推荐榜单。单看书名（主书名和副书名皆是如此）以及封面就很让人有阅读欲，内容全部取材于作者的生平，截取了作者“直面死亡”的十七个人生片段，以非常戏剧化笔触，讲述了一个个动人的小故事，串联起作者颇为传奇的人生。O'Farrell毕竟是写小说起家，虽然是回忆录，但结构的设置很巧妙，文笔非常好，细腻且不乏深度；故事娓娓道来，讲的都很完整，有伏笔也有高潮，感情很充沛（用她的编辑的原话，即“electrifying”）。全书的最后，作者的焦点不再局限于自身，同时延伸到下一代，非常温馨，也使这种书写更加有意义——不论是私人意义还是公众价值。

I totally enjoyed reading the first several chapters but later on I felt the author complaining after another with literally NO wisdom gleaned from each event.A good memoir is one where you know the author is making stuff up or stretching the truth a bit, but you don't care. This one, I thought she was exaggerating a bit too much.

早就想读Maggie O'Farrell的书。让我捧回家的第一本是她的小说：This Must Be the Place, 可先结缘的还是她的这一本自传/回忆录。 17次，死神的手曾轻拂过她的肩膀。也许是出于一种偷窥式的好奇心理，看到书名的时候我不自觉从商店的书架上取下它，翻开第一页，只读了一两段...
