著者简介

David Foster Wallace (1962–2008) was born in Ithaca, New York, in 1962 and raised in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois, where in his teens he was a regionally ranked junior tennis player. His works include Infinite Jest, Girl with Curious Hair, Brief Interviews with Hideous Men, Oblivion, A Supposedly Fun Thing I’ll Never Do Again, and Consider the Lobster. His final novel, The Pale King, was posthumously published in 2011.

写的最好的两篇是How Tracy Austin Broke My Heart和Federer Both Flesh and Not Wallace自己本身打过青少年网球，评价起球员来有时候直白的近乎刻薄，部分平铺直叙对常看网球的人来说也不免有些累赘，但他那些奇妙的类比和由此衍生出的哲学思考才是这本书令人惊叹的精髓所在。这本书里最奇妙的观点，出现在Wallace对卓越和平庸的探讨里。他意识到也许只有不具备天赋的人，才能看到并且思考这种自己没有运气拥有的天赋，而具备天赋的人反而blind and dumb，但这种盲目和愚钝并不是天赋的代价，而恰恰是天赋的本质。我看完这本书后最大的感受，的确是惋惜Wallace已经不在人世。我实在是很好奇，他会怎么写现在这个处在变革和交替边缘的网坛。

很多篇幅组成，每次读完一篇就忘，不过我觉得应该是读完了。

非常好看，是那种在体育新闻/传记里找不到的东西——Wallace对网球全情投入（他青少年时参加过地区别赛，所以对职业球员到底达到了什么水平心知肚明且满怀敬意）但又能跳脱出球迷熟稔的潜规则和惯性思维去看待这项运动，是作为一个真正有感情有思考能力且不惧于表达自己想法的人在写作。此外，语言传神至极，无论是白描还是抒发情感，都能把握得妙到颠毫。与精准相对应的，他相当刻薄，尤其写注释的时候，不过我喜欢。
