Almost thirty years ago, W. J. T. Mitchell’s "Iconology" helped launch the interdisciplinary study of visual media, now a central feature of the humanities. The chapters delve into such topics as the physics and biology of images, digital photography and realism, architecture and new media, and the occupation of space in contemporary popular uprisings. The book looks both backward at the emergence of iconology as a field and forward toward what might be possible if image science can indeed approach pictures the same way that empirical sciences approach natural phenomena.

”Image Science”的論述雖然從“不再把科學實踐中的圖像當given而是當taken/produced”的論調入手，但這些圖像並沒有成為直接的分析對象，而是提供瞭更多（反復？）論證wjtm之前思考的metapicture（比如化石和剋隆這對來自曆史兩頭的圖像形式）。直接後果就是：說著image/picture的化分是辯證的，但似乎對他來說圖像本質還是symbolic的，因而（再次？）錯過用“圖像怎麼看”這個（不一定非是technodeterminist）的問題去豐富圖像的ontology和hermaneutics之間的論述。不過因為前幾篇言簡意賅，希望確實是讀他的一個好的startpoint。
