Topics range from state finance and economic policy to imperial domination and political propaganda through coins types. The period covered by the book is from the invention of coinage (ca 600BC) to AD 400.

錢幣學界的VSI，本領域上佳入門書之一。質疑瞭很多傳統看法【如Lydia起源說】並鮮少給齣定論新解；關切點基於錢幣學的史學應用，財政史上的流通與貶值問題、政治史上的propaganda問題與羅馬帝國社會史等的處理均很適閤入門讀者一瞥概覽。涉及技術性的問題仍有待21世紀的新推進，因此與化學冶金技術相關的定量分析（末章一部分）不大可靠。偏重羅馬、偏重帝國西部，也有一些涉及雅典、希臘化諸王國的內容但並不多，關於希臘化諸王國敬請參考Thonemann。
