Topics range from state finance and economic policy to imperial domination and political propaganda through coins types. The period covered by the book is from the invention of coinage (ca 600BC) to AD 400.

钱币学界的VSI，本领域上佳入门书之一。质疑了很多传统看法【如Lydia起源说】并鲜少给出定论新解；关切点基于钱币学的史学应用，财政史上的流通与贬值问题、政治史上的propaganda问题与罗马帝国社会史等的处理均很适合入门读者一瞥概览。涉及技术性的问题仍有待21世纪的新推进，因此与化学冶金技术相关的定量分析（末章一部分）不大可靠。偏重罗马、偏重帝国西部，也有一些涉及雅典、希腊化诸王国的内容但并不多，关于希腊化诸王国敬请参考Thonemann。
