The period covered by the book is from the invention of coinage (ca 600BC) to AD 400.

钱币学界的VSI，本领域上佳入门书之一。质疑了很多传统看法【如Lydia起源说】并鲜少给出定论新解；关切点基于钱币学的史学应用，财政史上的流通与贬值问题、政治史上的propaganda问题与罗马帝国社会史等的处理均很适合入门读者一瞥概览。涉及技术性的问题仍有待21世纪的新推进，因此与化学冶金技术相关的定量分析（末章一部分）不大可靠。偏重罗马、偏重帝国西部，也有一些涉及雅典、希腊化诸王国的内容但并不多，关于希腊化诸王国敬请参考Thonemann。
