Emphasizing the importance of nuclear issues in the fifties and sixties, Zwigenberg traces the rise of global commemoration culture through the reconstruction of Hiroshima as a 'City of Bright Peace', memorials and museums, global tourism, developments in psychiatry, and the emergence of the figure of the survivor-witness and its consequences for global memory practices.

這本書梳理瞭45年以來有關廣島核彈的話語流變，描繪瞭各種勢力作用下廣島是如何被關注和冷落的，廣島的自我識彆又是如何變化和操縱變化的。很不簡單的是作者從如此復雜的曆史中能抽齣幾根綫來。因為是新書，對客觀看待90年代甚至2010年之前研究也有貢獻。唯一不足是不必要的細節太多。（而且諷刺口吻也太明顯瞭吧……）
