後來的社會學傢就再不像他們的前輩那樣熱衷於用一個變量來漂亮地解釋社會變遷的機製瞭，他們認為無論是馬剋思的階級，還是理性選擇理論的利益最大化，都要放在一時一地的情境之下纔不會淪為空洞的概念。於是轉而去勾連這些概念和社會曆史背景之間的淵源。至於做得怎麼樣，就不好說瞭。
