梅洛-龐蒂批評笛卡爾1笛卡爾的視覺模式乃是觸覺，光綫被理解為通過接觸的作用，就像事物對於盲人手杖的作用一樣；2不再有肖像的潛能，笛卡爾主義者不會在鏡子裏看見自己，笛卡爾主義者的銅版畫不像客體而僅僅隻是其錶象，最終它隻不過是墨漬（對比塞尚），視覺不再是事物雙重隸屬於大世界和一個私人小世界；3繪畫隻是思想的一種變形而不是通達存在之路的中心活動；4重視素描對於客體外殼的展示和錶象/廣延，忽視顔色對於客體本身的呈現/第二性質（對比塞尚）；5“我們確知具有感覺能力的是心靈而不是身體”（屈光學），雖然笛卡爾在第六節也描述瞭某種身體的不依賴於思想的自發活動；6笛卡爾認為文藝復興時期的平麵透視法能刺激我們的思想去尋找事物的真實形式，然而沒有任何一種象徵形式會永遠作為刺激物起作用，世界在此之後繼續運轉。
