一些标点符号和印刷符号的前生今世。但又不仅仅是对这些符号发展历程的描述，而是涉及多个领域：书籍的抄写和保存，校勘学的发展，早期教会，出版印刷史，等等，既有很人文的内容，也有纯技术的部分，读者可以进行多个领域的延伸阅读。感觉最有意思的是星号和dagger的那章，谈了很多脚注的发展历程，后来却又谈到了棒球明星Barry Bonds和小布什总统与星号的纠葛。最意外的是@符号，居然来自amphora。读的2013版，现已又出新版。

因给TIB写稿而邂逅的神作，竟然在年前啃完了。作者的学术研究涉猎之深与其造诣令人叹为观止。
