These essays, by thirteen specialists from Japan and the United States, provide a comprehensive view of the Japanese empire from its establishment in 1895 to its liquidation in 1945. The central argument put forth by this edited volume is that Japanese colonialism is unique in that it is a continental imperialism motivated mainly by circumstantial needs of a modernizing Japan and it substantially helped modernize those being colonized.
