倫奎斯特本人對最高院的全麵介紹，也是他五部著作裏唯一一本沒虧錢的。用他本人1952年作為大法官助手來到這裏的迴憶做引子，涵蓋瞭從馬歇爾到沃倫的一百多年的曆史。這些在今天讀起來已經不覺得新鮮瞭，反倒是法官們怎麼選助手、分配辦公室的內容更有意思。1987年齣版時，其中關於判決前閉門討論會的內容是首次披露，本書是2001年的增訂版。
