這部誕生於水門事件時期的作品洞見瞭美國總統“帝王化”的趨勢，但在結尾處大體仍對a strong President under the Constitution的前景保持樂觀。可是其後四十餘年所見證的，卻是總統製中imperial的一麵愈來愈被正當化（如unitary executive理論）。有趣的是，Schlesinger在書中提到美國總統製有一個五十年的腐化周期，如果從1973年的尼剋鬆算起，那麼高概率在2023仍居其位的Trump則真真是印證瞭施氏的預言。
