Deathbird Stories: A Pantheon of Modern Gods is a 1975 collection of short stories written by Harlan Ellison over a period of ten years;[1] the stories address the theme of modern-day "deities" that have replaced the older, more traditional ones. The collection, with its satirical, skeptical tone, is widely considered one of Ellison's best. The book includes a 1973 introduction and a stern caveat lector page advising the reader against enjoying the volume in one sitting. The title of the book comes from "The Deathbird", the nineteenth and last story in the collection.

哈蘭·傑·艾裏森（Harlan Jay Ellison，1934年5月27日－），美國科幻小說大師，《星際旅行》最初的創作者之一，其作品多次獲得雨果奬和星雲奬。

艾裏森齣生於俄亥俄州剋裏夫蘭一個猶太人傢庭，曾就讀於俄亥俄州立大學，但是18個月後就被開除，原因據其本人說是當時一位教授質疑他的寫作能力，在其後的40多年間，艾裏森每齣版一部作品，就會給這位教授寄上一份。

1955年，艾裏森遷居紐約市，開始緻力於科幻小說創作，兩年後他轉嚮黑幫小說創作，為獲取第一手感受，他親自加入瞭一個黑幫。1957年他進入軍中服役，1960年迴到紐約，在此期間他寫瞭大量的色情小說。

1962年，艾裏森遷居加利福尼亞州，創作瞭大量電視劇本，他為《星際奇航》創作的The City on the Edge of Forever一集贏得瞭當年美國編劇工會的最佳電視劇本奬，迄今為止還被認為是係列中最好的幾集之一。在這段時間內，艾裏森還積極投身於民權運動。他最好的一些著作都是寫於這一時期，其中包括雨果奬得奬作品《無聲狂嘯》。他一共獲得過10次雨果奬和4次星雲奬。1994年後，他定居於洛杉磯。

2006年，艾裏森被SFWA授予“SFWA大師”稱號，以錶彰其為科幻小說事業所作貢獻。
