评分写于1999年，今天看来其中知识性的东西已经不算太新鲜了。大概意思是从古到今，尽管对外国人的态度经常处于敌视与接洽的矛盾之中，但中国始终在和世界发生着联系，并非隔绝。在形容17世纪以前的中国时使用了“early Chinese Cosmopolitanism”一词。谈到了Chineseness该怎么定义的问题，但作者对中国古代史叙事不熟，居然在唐代“中国性”的盈缩上较真，陷进阪泉以后无中国的迷宫里去了。
