读的芝加哥大学出版社的版本，方志彤赠书。清楚明白，中间几章对作品的分析鞭辟入里，但并没有太多《蓦仿论》中那种叫人叹服的思想层面的解读。但《蓦仿论》的主体思想在这里已经可见一斑，首末两章以但丁为核心讲述性格与个人命运的关系在历代文学作品中的展现，第一章比较片面和生硬，最后一章稍好一些，强调但丁是现代历史意识的真正创造者。回应了浪漫主义对但丁的批评。结合思想史与作品接受史讨论了《神曲》中的思与诗的关系，很有见地。
