评分研究美日关系的学者并不少，但是以一己之力覆盖如此漫长时空、又能兼顾两国视角的恐怕也就拉菲伯尔一人。史实丰富，视野广阔，观点新颖，参考文献也很有价值，是一本值得一读的名著。本书是班克罗夫奖项当中有关日本题材的两本著作的其中之一，另一本是约翰道儿的《拥抱战败》。
