本來，齣於對作者的投入的誠摯的誠摯的尊重，我想給這本書打四星。但是一想到他說畢肖普的“鐵軌”一詩在描述手淫，就不能原諒，三星！也許喜愛畢肖普到瞭不理智的地步，看到不恰當地有損她的寫作會激發我的排斥。坐在大西洋的海風中，使自己以平靜的心情讀完這本書，不時遠望一天碧水那頭的基韋斯特。作者將Thom Gunn和畢肖普聯係對比，沒有足夠的說服力。兩個詩人的部分作品聯想起來可說服人，但同樣的類比也可以拿齣R.S.托馬斯和Robinson Jeffers來。作者將喬伊斯、哈代、赫伯特、和其他十七世紀以前英語詩人所做的聯係對比非常精彩。作者以自憐感傷、同性戀、成長陰影等心理來挖掘畢肖普是我對這本書最多不滿的地方。雖然，仍然推薦，可讀性還是比較強，泛泛描述之處不必當真就好。
