I thought it was going to be a cliche Love In The Time of Cholera story, but when Maugham closed the loop in the last 15 chapters, I thought of it better. The heroine reminds me of Kitty in Anna Karenina - vain and foolish, then transformed after an encounter with the nuns/involvement in charitable work. They even share the same name!

这世上，有的男人忠贞不渝，一颗朱砂恒印在心，也有的处处风流，说着何必太认真。有的女人聪敏，内心明净，懂得争取幸福，有的迷恋镜花水月，自视该拥有荡气回肠的爱情。于是愚钝者难免被骗受伤——不必抱怨不公，这只是愚钝者该当此报。 人往往可以被高尚感动，但始终不能因为高尚而爱上，我们看清对方的丑陋、可恨、残忍，但始终放不下。 所以，别去掀开那描画的面纱，因为芸芸众生称之为生活。 作者用主角的故事揭露面纱下的人性，文笔流畅优美极具感染力，对人性的探讨也发人深省。可是书中对爱情对婚姻对人性的描写未免太悲观，或许是我的经历太浅，也或许是我在人生的这前二十几年非常幸运的没有机会看到面纱下的景象，对生活尚且充满热忱与希望，所以我不愿意给这本书五星。但愿未来的生活也不要给我领悟剩下那一星的机会吧！

多年前下到kindle里面的一个版本，不确定是否是这一本。书里会有一些富有时代和地域特质的词汇，但重复率颇高，不影响整体阅读体验。早前电影和有声书都欣赏过几遍，但原著还是非常不同凡响的。毛姆粉一定要读。
