那些說這書無趣的是因為沒有感受史旦爺爺平民化又妙趣橫生的美式語言，中文譯本太生硬，不怪譯者，華麗的句子書看多瞭都會用，越是農村小說越是難譯呢。寫美國農村的題材是我最愛的，沒有錶麵上的歇斯底裏，卻是人性與倫理實在的揪扯。

One of Steinbeck's best. probably better than Cannery Row. Right on with the modern questions about morality: "How do you feel about backstabbing when superficially it is an act of honesty? How do you feel about letting a friend kill himself when it is disguised, and can be interpreted, as help?"
