The play begins with Max and Charlotte, a couple whose marriage seems about to rupture. But nothing one sees on a stage is the real thing, and some things are less real than others. Charlotte is an actress who has been appearing in a play about marriage by her husband, Henry. Max, her leading man, is also married to an actress, Annie. Both marriages are at the point of rupture because Henry and Annie have fallen in love. But is it the real thing? In "The Real Thing," Tom Stoppard combines his characteristically brilliant wordplay and wit with flashes of insight that illuminate the nature--and the mystery--of love, creating a multi-toned play that challenges the mind while searching out the innermost secrets of the heart.

Ever so elegant. The set-up of the first scene is tremendously clever. On the whole I find the play a lot less inquisitive on politics or philosophy than most of Sir Stoppard's other works, but I am ever willing to go on and on about love. (A la Keats: love is my religion.)

Loving and being loved is unliterary,it's happiness expressed in banality and lust/There're no commitments only bargains/He wants to punish me with his pain but I cant come up with the proper guilts/Gallons of ink and miles of typewriter ribbon expended on the misery of the unrequited lover;not a word about the utter tedium of the unrequiting
评分看戏的时候还是太年轻，再读scripts对Stoppard写relationship更佩服得不行，以及我都忘了DID这个梗了
评分My familiarity with the European-style marriage dynamics, which is filled with adultery, cruel honesty and sarcasm, makes the plot seem a lit bit cheesy, but the wordplay is very fun to do.
