Beginning with a long and extensively rewritten introduction surveying the predecessors of the Presocratics, this book traces the intellectual revolution initiated by Thales in the sixth century B.C. to its culmination in the metaphysics of Parmenides and the complex physical theories of Anaxagoras and the Atomists in the fifth century it is based on a selection of some six hundred texts, in Greek and a close English translation which in this edition is given more prominence. These provide the basis for a detailed critical study of the principal individual thinkers of the time. 杰弗里•斯蒂芬•基尔克（Geoffrey Stephen Kirk），生于1921年12月3日，卒于2003年3月10日，英国著名古典学者，从1974起担任剑桥大学第35任皇家古希腊讲座教授（Regius Professor of Greek），直到1982年退休为止。著有《赫拉克利特：宇宙论残篇》（Heraclitus: the cosmic fragments）（1954），《前苏格拉底哲学家》（合著）（1957）等著作，并是6卷本《伊利亚特》注释本的总编（1985-1993）。

约翰•厄尔•拉文（John Earle Rave），生于1914年12月14日，卒于1980年3月5日，英国著名古典学者，曾经担任剑桥大学皇家神学教授（Regius Professor of Divinity）。著有《毕达戈拉斯学派和埃利亚学派》（Pythagoreans and Eleatics）（1948），《前苏格拉底哲学家》（合著）（1957），《形成中的柏拉图的思想》（Plato’s Thought in the Making）（1965）等著作。

马尔科姆•斯科菲尔德（Malcolm Schofield），现任剑桥大学古代哲学教授，著有《阿那克萨戈拉研究》（An Essay on Anaxagoras）（1980），《前苏格拉底哲学家》（第二版合著）（1983）等著作。

聂敏里，现任中国人民大学哲学院教授，主要从事古希腊哲学的教学和研究，著有《20世纪亚里士多德研究文选》（2010），《存在与实体——亚里士多德〈形而上学〉Ζ卷研究（Ζ 1-9）》（2011）。
