Lois Lowry is known for her versatility and invention as a writer. She was born in Hawaii and grew up in New York, Pennsylvania, and Japan. After several years at Brown University, she turned to her family and to writing. She is the author of more than thirty books for young adults, including the popular Anastasia Krupnik series. She has received countless honors, among them the Boston Globe-Horn Book Award, the Dorothy Canfield Fisher Award, the California Young Reader.s Medal, and the Mark Twain Award. She received Newbery Medals for two of her novels, NUMBER THE STARS and THE GIVER. Her first novel, A SUMMER TO DIE, was awarded the International Reading Association.s Children.s Book Award. Lowry now divides her time between Cambridge and an 1840s farmhouse in Maine.

我一直觉得纳闷,为什么乌托邦文学或者反乌托邦文学里描述的乌托邦,并不是一个快乐的地方,很遗憾,我并没有在这本书里找到答案。这本书里的乌托邦,是一个没有了悲伤等负面情感的世界,相应地也缺乏激情等激烈的情感。Jonas的父亲即使在给婴儿执行注射死亡的时候,也处在一种哼着歌的快乐状态里。这究竟是麻木到习惯还是伪善?另外我不喜欢结局,Jonas带着Gabriel离开了乌托邦,去了别的地方,作者把这个地方描述成一个有血有肉有色彩有希望的地方,这个结局比较温吞,不知道是不是考虑到了书是面向青少年的。我暗暗期待的结局是,Jonas离开以后,发现别的地方跟自己的那个社区没什么不同。

最后的地方,也许是真的elsewhere,现实中不存在的虚无,Jonas记忆里仅存的希望,那是洒满阳光的天堂。

虽然是儿童科幻,但是,绝对是给18岁以上的,具有独立思想的人读的。超级棒,因为内容与当今社会相关联。

不算一口气看完,但是是第一本英语小说那么有兴趣地读完。结局开放式,但是有点想哭,现实好残忍……

看的是Houghton Mifflin Harcourt 出版的。小说本身感觉跟饥饿游戏或divergent有点像(只看过电影),只不过后者多强调专制而前者在说乌托邦环境下强调“the sameness”而失去生活的多彩等等……
